Domestic violence is a term that has also been referred to as dating violence, spousal abuse, intimate partner violence and domestic abuse. These terms are all the same in some way, or rather fall under the same category in law when it comes to categorising them. They are thus the many different forms that domestic violence can be experienced under. This type of abuse affects women at large but also affects a lot of children and men.
Types of Domestic Violence Intimate partner violence – This type can include any violence that ranges from psychological abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, as well as economic abuse. It is also described as one person in a relationship that tries and put the other person down or belittle them in the relationship. Domestic abuse – It includes both verbal and physical, sexual and spiritual abuse. Things like cyber-stalking and making threats over digital media is considered a form of intimate partner abuse. Physical violence – This type can include any type of assault which ranges from pushing, pinching, hitting, slapping and even choking somebody. Even worse offences include stabbing, shooting and worst of all, murder. Verbal, emotional and mental/psychological abuse – This type of abuse is best described as when people use words to either demean, criticize or decrease the confidence of the victim which can be either the wife, husband or partner victim. Sexual abuse – This abuse refers to any behaviour that allows for the use of sex to control the victim. This includes intimidation of the victim to engage in unsafe sex or practices they do not want to participate in. Economic or financial abuse – These are described as limiting the victim’s financial security if they don’t cooperate in certain ways. It also includes making threats. Spiritual abuse – In this case, the victim is forced to participate in religious practices that are different than that of their own. It could also include raising their children in a religion that the victim doesn’t want their children to be raised in. Stalking – This is also considered a serious type of domestic abuse and involves both harassment and the making of threats. Domestic Violence Facts and Effects Domestic violence is a major problem in the U.S., as well as many different countries all around the world. It can even be referred to as a big public health problem and affects up to 2 million women and shockingly 800,000 men in the U.S. alone. These numbers are quite shocking if you think about the fact that the U.S. is a first world country and that there are many countries that could potentially be even worse affected by it. Countries such as those in Africa and the Middle East which are considered third world countries tend to have it even worse. If domestic violence is a potential threat that results in homelessness, injuries, the death of victims and even children, then it is a matter that should be focused on far more than ever before.
