Neuropathy is a term that few are aware of. If ‘neuro' refers to the nerves which involve the brain, spinal cord and overall nervous system, then neuropathy can be described as any condition that damages the peripheral nervous system which includes these important organs and systems.The peripheral nervous system is referred to as a network of nerves which connects to the nervous system. There are a few types of nerves which are included in the peripheral nervous system and these include the motor nerves, autonomous nerves, as well as the sensory nerves.
The motor nerves consist of motor neurons that regulate the movement of our muscles and are those that we can control. This is best described as the action neurons we use to move the parts of our body whenever we choose to do so.
Autonomous nerves are best described as the nerves that regulate bodily functions that are outside your control. These only send messages from the sensory organs to the brain. These inform the brain when the body must do something, as well as when something is wrong.
Whatever symptoms your body experience, will be recognized by these nerves and send a response to your brain.
Neuropathy affecting motor nerves and function
Those who experience neuropathy that affects the motor nerves will experience muscle pain and could potentially also suffer from muscle twitching, cramps, muscle loss, bone mass loss and various changes in the proteins of their hair, skin and nails.
Neuropathy affecting autonomic neuropathy
Neuropathy that has an effect on autonomic neuropathy all depends on the glands and organs that are affected. Damage to these nerves will make you lose the ability to do certain things, Damage may cause you to develop constipation, abnormal blood pressure such as hypertension, loss of bladder control and an abnormal heart rate. Other then that, one may also experience symptoms such as fainting when standing up.
Neuropathy affecting sensory nerves and function
Neuropathy that affects the sensory nerves is usually a result of different complex symptoms. These include a loss of coordination and reflexes, general numbness which could be experienced in the entire body, a loss of coordination and regular burning sensations. It could even cause you an inability to feel pain or overexaggerated pain.
The development of neuropathies
As a serious factor that affects many people all around the world, there are many reasons why these neuropathies develop. One can inherit it if your family has a history of neuropathy and it can also, more often, be caused by physical trauma, cancer medications, alcoholism, toxins that spread throughout the body, vitamin deficiencies and metabolic, as well as autoimmune disorders.
There are no known treatments of these different neuropathies and as a result, doctors can only prescribe medications or methods for the symptoms that are experienced.
